He was the eldest son of Johann Jacob Freiherr von Hohenthal (1740–1802) and Johanna Christiane Luise von Wuthenau (1744–1815). In 1800 he married honor guard Friederike Wilhelmine von Krosigk (born December 30, 1781 in Hohenerxleben Castle ; † April 8, 1849 in Leipzig ), a daughter of the manor Gebhard Anton von Krosigk . He had four children with her:

  • Klara (1801–1850), married in 1830 to Count Emanuel Gotthard Schaffgotsch called Semperfrei von und zu Kynast and Greiffenstein (1802–1878)
  • Karl Friedrich Anton (1803–1852), married in 1829 to Countess Walpurgis Schaffgotsch, called Semperfrei von und zu Kynast und Greiffenstein (1810–1836) and after her death again in 1838 with Emilie Countess Neidhardt von Gneisenau (1809–1855)
  • Isidora (1805–1849), married in 1824 Carl Adam Traugott von Wuthenau, Lord of Hohenthurm with Rosenfeld, Lord of Glesien and Kölsa (1791–1862)
  • Karl Adolf (1811–1875), married in 1851 to Karoline von Berlepsch, Countess of Bergen (1820–1877)

After the death of his father, he and his younger brother took over his property and then agreed on a division of the property. So he came into possession of the manor Dölkau .
