The first documentary mention as Errikesleve iuxtam Bodam is in a document of the Nienburg monastery from the year 1205. A manorial complex at this point was initially owned by the von Freckleben family . In 1435 it came to the von Hoym family and then to Lorenz von Krosigk in 1522 . The facility, located on a limestone rock, was surrounded on three sides by dry trenches. It was expanded to become the headquarters of the von Krosigk family . In 1543 the property was divided, but then reunited in 1738/44.

The oldest surviving part of the castle is the east wing from the first quarter of the 16th century. There was a residential tower here, which was increased by one storey in 1560. The walls of the rectangular windows in particular have been preserved from this period. The elaborate portals on the courtyard side and the three gables of the head house probably date from the beginning of the 17th century. To the west of this wing there was originally an older western tower house. During the Thirty Years' War the castle, which was defended by a strong garrison and several small artillery pieces, offered the residents who had been driven out of the nearby towns protection and residence against the raids of marauding and dispersed troops.

Anton Friedrich von Krosigk had the two houses connected by a central wing in the second half of the 18th century. The middle wing was called the corps de logis . In 1807, on the site of the old tower house, the west wing, which still exists today, was built in the Biedermeier style . The dry trenches to the south and west of the castle were filled with the rubble from the demolished tower. At the end of the 19th century, a five-story tower in the neo-renaissance style was built on the north-western corner of the palace under the direction of the Hanoverian architect Ferdinand Schorbach . Schorbach also carried out the other modifications. A bay window was added in front of the upper floor of the northeast corner and the interior of the east wing was redesigned. A roof turret originally located in the middle wing was removed. At the same time a volute gable was built in the style of historicism , which refers to the Renaissance wing.

In the tower and in some rooms, parts of the existing building fittings from the end of the 19th century have been preserved.

In 1945 the von Krosigk family was expropriated and the castle was used for university purposes , including the Technical University of Magdeburg , and as a boarding school. From 1991 to 1997 the castle stood empty and fell into disrepair. It emerged vandalism . On August 24, 1997, the non-profit, Theatrum Herberge Hohenerxleben Foundation founded by Ingrid von Krosigk acquired the castle. A gradual restoration then took place. The end of the east wing was renewed in 1999.

In the local register of monuments , the castle is listed as a historical building under registration number 094 10122.

park

The castle is surrounded by a castle park that stretches to the east and runs along the right slope of the Bodehang via Löbnitz to Neugattersleben Castle . The park was built from 1800.
