Carl Mayer (sociologist)

Carl Mayer (born July 18, 1902 in Pforzheim ; † May 13, 1974 in Switzerland ) was an American religious sociologist of German origin.

Mayer studied social and political sciences at the University of Heidelberg with Alfred Weber , Eduard Heimann and Karl Jaspers . It was in 1929 for a work on the sociology of religion Weber PhD and then taught at the Trade Union School Academy of work in Frankfurt .

In 1933, after the academy closed, Mayer emigrated to New York , where he became a professor at the New School for Social Research . After the Second World War, he led a large-scale project to research religious life in Germany. His students Peter A. Berger and Thomas Luckmann also worked on this. After his retirement , Mayer moved to Switzerland and still taught as a visiting professor at the University of Frankfurt and the University of Konstanz .
