Carl Pflüger

Carl Pflüger (born August 8, 1905 in Ulm , † April 16, 1998 in Saulgau ; actually Karl Joseph Konrad Pflüger ) was a German painter, draftsman and graphic artist.

Life

Carl Pflüger was born the younger of two children. After graduating from high school in 1924, at the request of his parents, he began an apprenticeship in a bank, which he soon broke off. His artistic talent was first discovered by his sister Maria, who submitted an application portfolio for him to the Stuttgart Art Academy . Pflüger was accepted and studied with Robert Breyer and Anton Kolig , as well as in Gottfried Graf's graphics class . His fellow students included Wilhelm Geyer , Hans Gassebner , Manfred Henninger and Julius Herburger . Pflüger became a member of the artists 'group Stuttgarter Neue Sezession and was also a member of the Ulm Artists' Guild. After his art studies he added two semesters to teach German and Latin.

On May 2, 1931, he married Margot Schwarz. In order to support the family, he took a position as a drawing teacher at the Kepler Gymnasium in Ulm in 1932 . As a result, he was employed as a substitute teacher at various schools in the country.

In 1934 he was banned from painting by the National Socialists . From 1940 to 1945 he was a soldier and during this time he became a prisoner of war.

In 1946 he got a permanent job in Saulgau . Until his retirement in 1969 he taught art, Latin and German at the local grammar school. From 1972 he worked for one year as an art teacher at the Progymnasium in Mengen .

Pflüger made many trips. His first major trip took him to Italy by bicycle in 1927. He later toured Spain, Tunisia, Morocco and France, where he built a holiday home in Provence in 1968.

His work consists of countless drawings, lithographs , and oil paintings; But his creative focus was on watercolor painting . He signed his works with the abbreviation CP . His pictures are characterized by mood and atmospheric density instead of photographic accuracy. When asked about the fact that reality and depiction did not exactly match in his works, Pflüger is said to have answered grumpily: “I mol a picture!” (“I paint a picture!”).

This is the catchphrase that the Heimatmuseum Mengen used to describe an exhibition on the occasion of Pflüger's 111th birthday in 2016.
