Carl Roebelin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Carl Roebelin or Carl Roebelen (* 1855 , † 1927 ) was a Swiss plant hunter in the service of the nursery of Frederick Sander . In some English-language sources he is referred to as the German orchid hunter .

Life

Little is known about the life of Carl Roebelin.

Well-known orchid species are Vanda sanderiana (today: Euanthe sanderiana ) and Phalaenopsis sanderiana , which Roebelin discovered in the Philippines and sent to Frederick Sander. Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach named the two orchids in honor of Sander. The orchid species Aerides lawrenciae was probably also discovered by Roebelin .

Reports describe Roebelin as tough and physically fearless. During an expedition in the Philippines, for example, he did not allow himself to be stopped by an earthquake, although he himself almost died. However, he also experienced great pressure from his client.

The date palm Phoenix roebelenii and the orchids habenaria roebelenii , Aerides roebelenii and Cypripedium roebelenii are named in honor of Roebelin .
