The division of living beings into systematics is a continuous subject of research. Different systematic classifications exist side by side and one after the other. The taxon treated here has become obsolete due to new research or is not part of the group systematics presented in the German-language Wikipedia.

Euanthe sanderiana is the only plant species from the genus Euanthe in the family of orchid (Orchidaceae). She comes from the Philippines and iscalled Waling-Waling in the local language(translated: "beautiful goddess"). It becomes the breeding of hybrids used. Many successful Vanda hybrids were producedwith this species in Hawaii in the 1950s and 1960s. The genus name is currently a synonym for the genus Vanda , with which Euanthe was merged.

Vegetative characteristics

Euanthe sanderiana grows as a perennial herbaceous plant . It thrives as an epiphyte . The monopodial stem axis is about 60 centimeters long.

Generative characteristics

The approximately 20 cm long inflorescence contains 10 to 20 flowers. The hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic and threefold. The flowers are about 13 inches tall.

Location

The natural habitat of Euanthe sanderiana is at altitudes from 0 to 500 meters.

Botanical history and taxonomy

This species was discovered around 1880 by the plant hunter Carl Roebelin at the foot of Mount Apo . Roebelin was sent by Frederick Sander's nursery and the specific epithet sanderiana honors him.

It was first described in 1882 under the name ( Basionym ) Vanda sanderiana by Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach . The new combination to Euanthe sanderiana was published in 1914 by Rudolf Schlechter . In contrast to the genus Vanda , the spur on the back of the labellum is missing in Euanthe sanderiana .

Euanthe sanderiana is considered the queen of the Filipino orchids and has been the country's national flower since 2013.
