Phalaenopsis sanderiana is a plant of the genus Phalaenopsis in the family of orchid (Orchidaceae). She is from the Philippines . It is used to breed hybrids; as early as 1946 there were about 17 hybrids of this species.
description
Phalaenopsis sanderiana grows as a perennial herbaceous plant . The relatively large, hermaphrodite flowers are 7 to 8 cm and are zygomorphic . The flower color varies from dark to lighter pink tones to almost white flowers. Like all species of the genus Phalaenopsis, this species grows epiphytically and has a monopodial habit. The labellum is single-lobed and has yellow-purple areas in the rear.
Botanical history
The first Phalaenopsis sanderiana was discovered by the plant hunter Carl Roebelin on the island of Mindanao around 1885 and sent to his client Frederick Sander . He showed the plant to Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach , who named it in honor of Sander.
Other reports assume that Roebelin did not discover this species on the main island Mindanao, but on the small side island Davao (1881). There he would have met hostile warriors whom he could calm down with gifts.
Phalaenopsis sanderiana has sometimes been viewed as a variety of Phalaenopsis amabilis or as a natural hybrid between Phalaenopsis amabilis and Phalaenopsis schilleriana . Today it is considered a separate species.
