Carl Schaarschmidt

Carl (also: Karl) Max Wilhelm Schaarschmidt (born November 3, 1822 in Berlin ; † December 26, 1908 ) was a German librarian .

Life

Schaarschmidt attended the Friedrichswerder High School in Berlin and the Royal State School Pforta before studying classical philology, history and philosophy in Berlin and Halle . In 1845 he received his doctorate. He completed his probationary year at the Berlinisches Gymnasium zum Grauen Kloster , interrupted by a position as a private tutor in England with the sons of the Bavarian ambassador August von Cetto . In 1847, after his return to Berlin, he completed the probationary year at the Cöllnisches Realgymnasium , where he was an assistant teacher from 1848 to 1849. In 1849 he received his habilitation at the University of Bonn . He then taught at the University of Bonn, interrupted by a year at the Royal Pedagogical Seminar in Berlin. In October 1854 Schaarschmidt was then secretary at the Bonn University Library . However, he continued to teach at the university, becoming an associate professor in 1859 and a full honorary professor in 1895. As a librarian, he became a sub-librarian in 1872 and a senior librarian in 1882. In 1901 he retired. From 1892 to 1895 he was also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Royal Library in Berlin.
