Carl Schmachtenberg (born November 1, 1848 in Hugenbruch ( Oberdüssel district ); † January 28, 1933 there (today in Wuppertal )) was a German writer. He wrote numerous poems and prose texts in Bergisch dialect and is considered an important native poet of the Bergisches Land .

Life

Good Hugenbruch

Carl Schmachtenberg was born on November 1, 1848 on the Hugenbruch estate near Aprath (today as Oberdüssel zu Wuppertal ). At an early age he helps to run his parents' farm, which he continues to run on his own after their death. In addition, he began to write poems in his youth, in which he describes his homeland and everyday experiences. He mostly took the suggestions and content from his everyday life, as the titles De fule Kneit (The lazy servant) or De Kuckuck röpt (The cuckoo calls) show.

In 1883 the Joost publishing house in Langenberg published its first volume of poems, En Freud on Leid (In joy and sorrow), written in Bergisches Platt . In the following years further texts were published by him. His poetry is characterized by love for people and nature, as well as a pinch of humor. He quickly became famous in the region. His books experience numerous new editions.

Schmachtenberg is reluctant to leave his farm and remains unmarried throughout his life. He died on January 28, 1933 in his house, to which he had dedicated one of his most famous poems ( Min Hus ).
