Carl Stahlschmidt

Johann Carl Friedrich Stahlschmidt (born December 4, 1831 in Plettenberg , † September 6, 1902 in Aachen ) was a German chemist , secret government councilor and university professor.

Life

After studying in Gießen from 1851 to 1854 , Stahlschmidt was an assistant at the Royal Trade Academy in Berlin from 1854 to 1857 and teacher of inorganic chemistry at the Royal Provincial Trade School in Schweidnitz from 1860 to 1870 . From 1870 he was a professor at the Royal Technical University of Aachen . His work dealt among other things with the production of hollow glass products for the storage of food and luxury goods and the cleaning of sugar beet juice . He published works on nicotine , strychnine and brucine , as well as on the determination of sugar in wine. Stahlschmidt was the first to describe the fungus pigment polyporic acid . In the field of inorganic chemistry, Stahlschmidt has worked on the constitution of chlorinated lime , on iodine nitrogen , on reduction experiments with zinc and on the production of fiery mercury .
