Bernard Burrows

Sir Bernard Alexander Brocas Burrows , GCMG (* 3. July 1910 , † 7. May 2002 ) was a British diplomat and writer , among other things, from 1958 to 1962 Ambassador to Turkey and, most recently from 1966 to 1970 Permanent Representative to NATO was . After leaving the diplomatic service, he wrote numerous autobiographical books on foreign, security and defense policy.

Life

Bernard Alexander Brocas Burrows, son of School Board Edward Henry Burrows and its Ione Macdonald, completed after the renowned 1440 founded Eton College to study at Trinity College of the University of Cambridge . In 1934 he entered the diplomatic service (Foreign Service) and found uses in various representations abroad and in the State Department ( Foreign Office ) . Between 1947 and 1949 he was Head of the Eastern Division in the State Department and then from 1950 to 1953 Counselor at the Embassy in the United States . In 1950 he became Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG). From 1953 to 1958 he was Political Resident in the Persian Gulf States with official residence in Bahrain and in this position was responsible for diplomatic relations with Bahrain, Qatar , Kuwait and the seven Trucial States , today's United Arab Emirates . became as such on June 9, 1955 the Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG), so that he has since led the name suffix "Sir".

In 1958, Burrows replaced James Bowker as ambassador to Turkey and remained in this post until 1962, when Denis Allen succeeded him there. He then served as Deputy Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs (Defense) between 1963 and 1966 . Most recently, he took over from Evelyn Shuckburgh in 1966 as Permanent Representative to NATO and held this post until he retired in 1970, whereupon Edward Peck succeeded him. On June 13, 1970 he was raised to the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George (GCMG). After leaving the diplomatic service, he wrote numerous autobiographical books on foreign, security and defense policy.

His son Rupert Burrows and daughter Antonia Burrows emerged from his marriage to Ines Walter in 1944.
