Evelyn Shuckburgh

Sir Charles Arthur Evelyn Shuckburgh , GCMG , CB (born May 26, 1909 ; † December 12, 1994 ) was a British diplomat who was, among other things, permanent representative to NATO between 1963 and 1966 and, most recently, ambassador to Italy from 1966 to 1969 . He was also involved between 1970 and 1980 as chairman of the Executive Committee of the British Red Cross and was also chairman of the Council of the British Red Cross from 1976 to 1980 .

Life

Charles Arthur Evelyn Shuckburgh, son of colonial official John Evelyn Shuckburgh , graduated after attending the prestigious 1382 founded Winchester College to study at King's College of the University of Cambridge . After its completion in 1933, he joined the diplomatic service (Foreign Service) and found uses in various representations abroad and in the State Department ( Foreign Office ) . Between 1947 and 1948 he was head of the South America section and between 1949 and 1950 head of the West section in the Foreign Ministry. In 1949 he became Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) and served 1950-1951 as Head of Unit Western organizations before 1951-1954 First Private Secretary (Principal Private Secretary) of Foreign Minister (Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs ) , Anthony Eden . In 1954 he also became Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) and between 1954 and 1956 he held the post of Assistant Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs (Middle East) . Afterwards was from 1956 to 1958 as Senior Civilian Instructor Lecturer at Imperial Defense College (IDC) in London . On January 1, 1959, he became Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG), so that from then on he carried the suffix "Sir".

Then Shuckburgh was between 1960 and 1962 Deputy Undersecretary for Political Affairs in the State Department (Deputy Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs (Political)) . In 1963 he replaced Paul Mason as Permanent Representative to NATO and held this post until he was replaced by Bernard Burrows in 1966. Most recently, he succeeded John Guthrie Ward as Ambassador to Italy in 1966 and remained in this position until he retired 1969, whereupon Patrick Hancock became his successor. During this time he was elevated to the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George (GCMG) on June 10, 1967 .

After his retirement, Sir Evelyn Shuckburgh also served as Chairman of the Executive Committee of the British Red Cross between 1970 and 1980 and was also Chairman of the Council of the British Red Cross from 1976 to 1980 . He was also a member between 1974 and 1981 and at the same time chairman of the Standing Commission of the International Red Cross from 1977 to 1981 . He also served as Vice-Chairman of the British Red Cross Council between 1980 and 1981 .

On September 25, 1937 he married Nancy Mildred Gladys Brett, daughter of Oliver Sylvain Baliol Brett, 3rd Viscount Esher and Antoinette Heckscher. From this marriage the daughter Catherine Shuckburgh and the two sons Julian John Evelyn Shuckburgh and Robin Anthony Shuckburgh were born.
