Paul Mason , KCMG , KCVO (born June 11, 1904 , † May 14, 1978 ) was a British diplomat who, among other things, was ambassador to the Netherlands between 1954 and 1960 , permanent representative to NATO from 1960 to 1963, and most recently between 1963 and 1966 was permanent representative at the UN conference on disarmament in Geneva .

Life

Paul Mason, son of professor and Vice Chancellor of the University of Cambridge Arthur James Mason , began after the renowned 1440 founded Eton College , a study of history at King's College , University of Cambridge, which he in 1926 with a focus on history of modern times, graduated with honors. Then he entered the diplomatic service in 1928 (Foreign Service) and found uses in various representations abroad and in the State Department ( Foreign Office ) . After the end of the Second World War , he briefly headed the Refugees Department in 1945 and was Head of the North America Department between 1945 and 1946, before he was Head of the Political Affairs Department of the United Nations from 1946 to 1949 . In 1947 he became Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG). In 1949 he took over the post as envoy to Bulgaria and remained there until 1951. From 1951 to 1954 he was Assistant Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs (Eastern Europe) in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs . On June 10, 1954, he was beaten Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG) and has since had the suffix "Sir".

As the successor to Nevile Butler , he took over the post of ambassador to the Netherlands in 1954 and held it until 1960, whereupon Andrew Napier Noble succeeded him there. During this time he was also beaten on March 27, 1958 to Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO). In 1960 he replaced Frank Kenyon Roberts as Permanent Representative to NATO and held this position until he was replaced by Evelyn Shuckburgh in 1963. Most recently, he succeeded Michael Wright as permanent representative at the UN Conference on Disarmament in Geneva in 1963 and remained there until he retired in 1964, after which Harold Beeley succeeded him.

Later, Paul Mason was also a member of the company founded in 1935 Lansdowne Club was in 1970 High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire and also served from 1972 until his death in 1978 as Treasurer (Treasurer) of the University of Nottingham . His marriage to Roberta McDougall in 1938 resulted in a son and a daughter.
