Kurtz came from a family that had worked for generations in Reutlingen as a bell and piece caster and since 1803 as a syringe manufacturer in the manufacture of fire extinguishers in Stuttgart .

In 1833 he opened a pewter shop under the C. W. Kurtz company in Stuttgart's Kirchstrasse No. 2 on the market square . The company initially traded mainly in pewter dishes and church supplies. Its mostly made of tin and sometimes silvered Taufschalen , Taufkannen, Supper devices and offering plate found in many churches throughout Germany.

In 1833 Carl Wilhelm Kurtz married Jakobine Louise Christine Dolmetsch (1808–1889), a daughter of the master baker Jacob Ulrich Dolmetsch. The couple had seven children, of whom the son Hermann Kurtz (* 1847) continued the business under his name. At the end of the 19th century, the business of manufacturing and selling pewter figures shifted more and more to the toy business , which became the exclusive business area in the 20th century. In 1905 Otto Kurtz took it over and the business remained in the family until 1997. Today, Spielwaren Kurtz at Marktplatz 10 is part of the Vedes group.
