Carl von Baur (geologist)

Carl Theodor von Baur , also Karl Baur (born November 25, 1836 in Ulm , † January 20, 1911 in Degerloch ), was a German geologist and paleontologist.

Life

Baur grew up in Ulm, studied geology and natural sciences from 1853 at the Polytechnic in Stuttgart and from 1857 in Tübingen in order to work in the mining industry. In Tübingen he was a student of Friedrich August Quenstedt . In 1859 he received his doctorate with the award task The storage conditions of the Lias on the left bank of the Neckar in Tübingen. The work was still under the influence of Quenstedt's school, which largely neglected tectonic aspects and essentially considered the storage conditions of the Jura to have been handed down, even if Baur already noted faults, which he dated to the Jura. Even then, Oscar Fraas and Karl Deffner made the views obsolete, and Baur, who was friends with them, later admitted this. In 1860 he passed his first state examination and, after continuing his studies at the Bergakademie in Leoben, his second state examination in 1862. Then he was employed by the Württemberg state in Königsbronn , initially as a commissioner for the rail network. From 1871 to 1874 he was an inspector at the Wasseralfingen rolling mill and from 1874 in the royal Bergrat in Stuttgart, where he became director in 1891 and later its president. In the Bergrat he spent a long time replacing the Bad Friedrichshall salt works in Kochendorf , which had been shut down in 1895 due to water ingress. When the new shaft in Kochendorf was being built, there were also major problems with the rush of water, which led to heated discussions about the feasibility of the project. In 1904 he retired due to heart disease.

As a geologist, he worked with Jacob Hildenbrand on the 1: 50,000 geological maps of Neckarsulm, Künzelsau, Crailsheim, Bad Mergentheim and Ellwangen (mainly in the shell limestone). His extensive fossil collection, with a focus on the Brown Jura from Wasseralfingen and the shell limestone from Jagstfeld, went to the Natural History Cabinet in Stuttgart.

From 1894 to 1896 he was chairman of the Vaterländischer Verein für Naturkunde Württemberg , honorary member since 1907 and honorary chairman since 1909. In 1884 he became a member of the Leopoldina .
