Carl Porenta (born January 17, 1814 in Trieste , Austrian Empire , † January 31, 1898 in Trieste, Austria-Hungary ), from 1866 Carl Ritter von Porenta , was a Slovenian lawyer and politician.

Life

Carl (also Carlo , Karl or Karol ) was the son of Simon Porenta from Bischoflack ( Škofja Loka ). After graduating from high school in Ljubljana (1830), he began to study law and received his doctorate in 1838 at the University of Padua . In 1861 he became a member of the Trieste city council for the first time and from 1861 to 1863 he was an Imperial and Royal Higher Regional Judge . In the years 1863 to 1869 he was mayor ( podestá ) of the city of Trieste and from 1861–1863 and 1873–1876 a member of the Austrian House of Representatives.

In 1866 received the Knight's Cross of the Austrian Imperial Leopold Order and was then knighted in 1867. Carlo Porenta was the first mayor of Trieste of Slovene descent.
