Carle Wescher

Carle Wescher (born August 16, 1832 in Strasbourg , † August 15, 1904 in Paris ) was a French classical philologist , epigraphist , archaeologist and librarian.

In 1852, Wescher briefly studied at the École normal supérieure . After the Agrégation he worked as a teacher in Alençon . From 1859 to 1863 he was a member of the École française d'Athènes and from 1861 he was involved in the excavations in Delphi . In 1863 he took part in a research trip to Egypt. From 1864 he worked as a librarian at the manuscript department of the Bibliothèque nationale in Paris, where he found a previously unknown manuscript with texts by siege technicians ( police officers ), the Mynas Codex (Codex Parisinus suppl. Graecus 607). He studied the writings of these authors in depth. In addition to numerous studies on ancient inscriptions, he published the work of Dionysius of Byzantium . In 1887 he became "Professeur d'Archéologie" at the Bibliothèque nationale. In 1890 he retired.
