Carlo De Simone

Carlo De Simone (born November 22, 1932 in Rome ) is an Italian linguist . Until 1998 he taught as a professor for comparative linguistics at the University of Tübingen .

Life

After graduating from high school in Rome in 1950, Carlo De Simone studied comparative linguistics and classical archeology at the University of Rome and received his doctorate in 1955 with a thesis on messapic inscriptions (title of the dissertation: Le iscrizioni messapiche: cronologia e fonetismo ). He then studied as a scholarship holder of the German Academic Exchange Service ( DAAD ) from 1955 to 1956 with Hans Krahe in comparative linguistics in Tübingen and became Krahe's assistant in 1961 (until 1964). In November 1964 Carlo De Simone was habilitated at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Tübingen with a thesis on The Greek Borrowings in Etruscan . From 1972 to 1973 he held the chair for comparative linguistics (Indo-European studies) at the University of Vienna ; from 1975 to 1980 he was Professor of Linguistics ( Glottologia ) at the University of Perugia . In 1980 he was finally appointed professor of comparative linguistics at the University of Tübingen, where he taught until his retirement in 1998. Carlo De Simone's scientific focus is on the languages ​​of ancient Italy, in particular he published numerous articles on Etruscan inscriptions in the journal Studi Etruschi .
