Carlos Bernardes (* in São Caetano do Sul ) is a Brazilian tennis referee .

Career

Bernardes was best known when on February 22, 2015 at the Rio Open in Rio de Janeiro in the semi-final match against the eventual finalist Fabio Fognini, he regularly sanctioned Rafael Nadal's time-outs twice. Nadal Bernardes then threatened that he would never again lead a game of his. Nadal admitted at a press conference at the French Open that he had asked the players' union to stop using Bernardes in his games. The players' union ATP has not used Bernardes in any other Nadal game since this incident. Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka said it shouldn't matter who is on the pitch and there shouldn't be any bonuses for certain players. Even Novak Djokovic commented on the subject, he had also one or the other arbitrators rather on the chair as another, but he would never ask that an arbitrator should no longer manage his game, as he that is unfair to the officials over would feel.

Bernardes has two residences in Gorle, Italy, and in São Caetano do Sul , Brazil .
