Carlos Juan Finlay de Barrés (born December 3, 1833 in Camagüey , Cuba , † August 20, 1915 in Havana ) was a Cuban doctor and scientist who discovered the mosquito as a carrier of yellow fever .

Career

Born Charles Finley, he changed his name to Carlos Juan Finlay. He studied at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania in the USA in 1853 . In 1855 he took his exams and completed his studies in Havana and Paris . He settled in Cuba and opened a doctor's office there.

In 1865 Finlay sent a scientific article to the Cuban Academy of Sciences in which he worked out the connection between climatic conditions and the occurrence of yellow fever. While studying ancient Mayan manuscripts , it occurred to him that the disease could possibly be transmitted by mosquitoes. Finlay became famous for his proof that the mosquito is the vector of yellow fever. He recommended combating the mosquito as a measure to prevent the spread of yellow fever. It was not until 20 years after this discovery in 1881 that his findings became the basis for combating yellow fever.
