Carlos Antonio Muñoz Martínez (born October 24, 1967 in Guayaquil , † December 26, 1993 in General Villamil ) was an Ecuadorian football player.

Career

Club career

Carlos Muñoz began his football career in 1987 with CD Filanbanco in his hometown of Guayaquil. With the club, which was dissolved in 1991, he played until 1990. In that year he moved to Barcelona SC Guayaquil , one of the top clubs in the country alongside Emelec Guayaquil , LDU Quito and Deportivo Quito . With Barcelona SC he played an extremely successful 1991 season. On the one hand, the first place in the Ecuadorian football championship was occupied with four points ahead of CD El Nacional , on the other hand, Muñoz reached the final of the Copa Libertadores with Barcelona SC . In the competition, the club prevailed against CA Progreso from Uruguay , local rivals CS Emelec and Argentina's noble club CA River Plate in the knockout games and stood in the final against Club Olimpia from Paraguay's capital Asunción . After a 2-0 defeat at the Estadio Defensores del Chaco , the team of coach Miguel Brindisi , once a successful Argentine midfielder and participant in the 1974 World Cup , played 1-1 in Guayaquil and lost the final with 1: 3 goals. The following year was not so successful for Carlos Muñoz and Barcelona SC, the championship could not be won this time. However, he was the top scorer in Serie A.

National team

Carlos Muñoz has been used on the Ecuadorian national soccer team thirty-five times. These games took place between 1987 and 1993. He scored four goals. With the selection of Ecuador he took part in the Copa America three times , but Ecuador was not victorious in any tournament. In 1989 and 1991 the tournament for Ecuador was over after the preliminary round, in 1993 they were more successful. In a group with Uruguay, Venezuela and the United States , the tournament in their own country only failed in the semi-finals against Mexico .

death

Carlos Muñoz died in a traffic accident on December 26, 1993 at the age of 26. He left behind his wife, Veoleta Vergara, a daughter and a son who all survived the accident.
