The poet Carlos Queiroz

Jose Carlos Queiroz Nunes Ribeiro (born April 5, 1907 in Lisbon , Portugal , † October 27, 1949 in Paris , France ) was a Portuguese poet . Although his work is very narrow, it is significant because of his deep friendship with Fernando Pessoa and the fact that his aunt was the only life partner in Pessoa's life.

Life

Carlos Queiroz was born in Lisbon and studied law in Coimbra . He later wrote for various magazines in which his poems first appeared, for example for A Contemporea and Revista de Portugal . His favorite subjects were childhood, love and the world. In 1935 he received the Premio Antero de Quental and thus one of the highest literary awards in the country.

He was director of the magazines “Panorama” (1941) and “Litoral” (1944). He died in Paris on October 27, 1949.

Pessoa, Ophélia and Carlos

As a young woman, his aunt Ophélia Queiroz had a liaison with the poet Fernando Pessoa. She remained the only one in the poet's life. She had met Pessoa through an advertisement, her nephew was a frequent guest in the Pessoa house. During their second liaison, Carlos Queiroz brought along a photo he showed to his aunt, who showed Pessoa drinking alcohol. The picture contained a dedication for Carlos Queiroz and is one of the most famous pictures of Pessoa that exist. Because of this picture and the intervention of Carlos Queiroz, his aunt contacted Pessoa again for a short time.

After Pessoa's death, he was able to remember his best friend primarily through an essay: Homenagem a Fernando Pessoa , published in 1936 as an essay , published in the magazine Presença and a letter in memory of Pessoa: Carta a memoria de Fernando Pessoa , (for first anniversary of death), also published in Presença , No. 40, July 1936.
