Carlos Reis (painter)
Carlos António Rodrigues dos Reis (born February 21, 1863 in Torres Novas , † August 21, 1940 in Coimbra ) was a Portuguese painter . His work mainly includes landscapes of great brightness and color as well as portraits .
Career
Reis was a student of Silva Porto at the Academy of Fine Arts in Lisbon. A scholarship from the Portuguese King Carlos I enabled him to study in Paris from 1889. In 1895 he returned to Portugal. He taught landscape painting at the art academy. From 1905 he was director of the Museu de Arte Antiga and from 1911 to 1914 of the Museu de Arte Contemporânea . He lived in the Solar da Quinta dos Lagares d'El-Rei in Lisbon. A museum in his native Torres Novas has been named after him since 1942 .
