Carlos Rincon

Carlos Rincón (born October 10, 1937 in Colombia ; † December 24, 2018 in Germany , actually Carlos Eduardo Rincón Bolivar ) was a Colombian-German literary scholar and cultural theorist who taught at the Latin America Institute of the Free University of Berlin from 1990 until his retirement .

Life

Rincón initially studied in Colombia, but then went to the University of Leipzig , where he received his doctorate in 1965 under Werner Bahner and the famous Romanist Werner Krauss . Between 1970 and 1976 he carried out research at what was then the Academy of Sciences of the GDR, partly in Leipzig, partly in Berlin. With Werner Krauss, Rincón moved to Berlin for some time. From 1976 to 1980 Rincón was a full professor at the Universidad Central in Caracas , Venezuela.

He later moved to Colombia and Nicaragua; Among other things, he was personal advisor to the Nicaraguan Minister of Education, Ernesto Cardenal, from 1980 to 1986 . In 1990 he accepted a position at the Free University of Berlin for the "Chair for Literary and Cultural Theory", where he taught until his retirement in 2002.

Rincón was described as one of the "most important contemporary literary and cultural theorists", especially with regard to Latin America.

In 2003 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Leipzig.
