The Carlton Center is a skyscraper in Johannesburg , South Africa . It stands on Commissioner Street and when it was built in 1973 was the tallest building in the southern hemisphere at 223 meters .

Until 2019, the Carlton Center was the tallest skyscraper in Africa. The Leonardo skyscraper in Sandton is higher today . The Carlton Center is also South Africa's fourth tallest structure after the Telkom Joburg Tower and the Sentech Tower .

On the top floor, the 50th, is the viewing platform The Top of Africa , which offers a panoramic view of Johannesburg. At an altitude of 1753 meters in Johannesburg, the platform is almost 2000 meters above sea level.

The Carlton Center in 1999 for 33 million Rand sold after it had been offered for two years. Today it houses the headquarters of Transnet , the semi-public South African railway company. On the lower floors there is a shopping center with over 180 shops and an ice rink.

The Carlton Hotel in a second, separate tower in the same complex was closed in 1997. This has also been seen in films like Flat Feet in Africa .
