The Carney Island ( English Carney Island ) is an ice-covered, rugged and glaciated island in the Amundsen Sea in the Southern Ocean, off the west coast of the Antarctic mainland . The uninhabited island with an area of around 8500 km² is located in the Getz Ice Shelf around 36 kilometers north of the Bakutis coast of the Marie-Byrd-Land region .
It is uncertain who discovered the island and when. The time of the first discovery probably lies between the years 1955 and 1959, when the USA examined the coastal areas of the Antarctic in detail with its US Navy (see: Operation Deep Freeze ).
The island is named after Admiral Robert B. Carney (1895–1990), who was Chief of Staff of the US Navy from 1953 to 1954 .
