Amundsen Lake
The Amundsen ( Norwegian Amundsenhavet ) is a marginal sea of the Southern Ocean (or the South Pacific in the old reading) and is located off the west coast of Antarctica in the amount of 110 ° west longitude between Cape Dart on Siple Island in the west and Cape Flying Fish on Thurston Island to the east. To the east it borders on the Bellingshausen Sea , immediately west of the Siple Island on the Wrigleygolf and 1000 kilometers further to the west is the Ross Sea . In between, along the Hobbs , Ruppert and Saunders coasts, there is a previously unnamed marginal sea.
The Norwegian captain Nils Larsen, who explored the sea in February 1929 on board his ship Norvegia , named the sea after the Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen (1872–1928). Since the sea is generally thickly frozen with pack ice, the exact course of the coast was unknown until February 1940, when participants of the United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939–1941) under the direction of the American polar explorer Richard Evelyn Byrd undertook reconnaissance flights in the region . In 1946 two icebreakers tried as part of Operation Highjump (1946-1947) to cross the sea to get as close as possible to the coastal shield volcano Mount Siple , but had to cancel the project because of the ice conditions.
The Thwaites Glacier flows into the Amundsen Sea . In 2002 a 3400 km² iceberg broke off the tongue of the glacier .
