The Siple Island ( English Siple Island ) is a permanently snow-covered, uninhabited island in West Antarctica . It is separated from the Bakutis coast of Marie Byrd Land by the Getz Ice Shelf . The distance to the mainland over the ice shelf is around 50 km. The approximately 150 km long island with an area of about 6390 km² is dominated in the northwest by the 3110 m high Mount Siple , an inactive volcano . According to the location of the island, the climate is polar and characterized by strong winds.
The United States Geological Survey mapped them on the basis of the United States Navy's own surveys and aerial photographs from 1959 to 1965. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named them in 1967 after the American Antarctic explorer and geographer Paul Siple (1908–1968) .
