The Carolabrücke (also known as the Königin-Carola -brücke ) is an 187 m long railway bridge that spans the Elbe between Bad Schandau ( Krippen district ) and Rathmannsdorf ( Wendischfähre district ) at kilometer 11.86 .

history

The bridge was built from 1874 to 1877 as part of the construction of the Bautzen – Bad Schandau railway line at km 63.3. The structure originally consisted of two superstructures, one for rail traffic on the downstream side and a parallel one for road traffic on the upstream side, with the superstructures resting on common pillars and abutments . In the 1970s, the state of the structure was no longer adequate for traffic loads. Road traffic was conducted as one-way traffic with traffic lights. The structure was a speed limit stop for trains .

After the completion of the new road bridge over the Elbe in 1977, the old road bridge was dismantled in 1985 and the superstructures of the railway bridge were replaced in the following years. Before the renovated bridge was put into operation, a special trip with the steam locomotives 50 3616 and 52 8148 was carried out at the ends of the train on September 30, 1990.

The bridge has three openings in the river area with spans of 52.0 m in the peripheral fields and 83.2 m in the middle field. It is continued on both sides in the foreland area by girder bridges made of reinforced concrete , before the renovation there were stone vaulted bridges , each with a clearance of 10 m, two openings on the right and four openings on the left. The superstructures of the main bridge have a roadway below. They used to be iron trusses, made by the Königin-Marien-Hütte , with the construction form of the semi-parabolic girder , i.e. H. Parabolic upper chords and straight lower chords were executed. Since the superstructures were replaced, an arched bridge has spanned the opening in the middle field . The two edge fields are designed as trough bridges . Two sandstone pillars mark the ends of the river bridge. In the river area there is a clearance height of 6.53 m at the highest navigable water level. The pillars are made of sandstone. In the course of the renovation of the superstructure, the support banks were made of reinforced concrete. The two river pillars have a deep foundation with wooden piles. The pillars of the approach bridges are flat .
