Carolina is a city in the South African province of Mpumalanga . It is the administrative center of the municipality of Albert Luthuli in the District Gert Sibande .

geography

Carolina is located near the Komati in the Grass and Wetlands Region (roughly: " Grass and Wetlands Region "). In 2011, 16,846 inhabitants lived here. The town includes the township of Silobela in the south of the urban area, where more than 11,000 people live. Carolina is west of Swaziland .

history

Carolina was established in 1883 as a breakout station to the Barberton goldfields on the Groenvlei and Goedehoop farms . The founder Cornelius Johannes Coetzee named the place after his wife Carolina. In 1888 a church building for the Dutch Reformed Church was built. During the Second Boer War , almost the entire place was destroyed in 1900, but rebuilt after the war. In 1907 the place was connected to the Ermelo –Carolina– Machadodorp railway .

Economy and Transport

The main source of income is agriculture; in addition, coal and gemstones are mined. The rock carvings of the San and the Nooitgedacht Dam Nature Reserve , which is best known for its bird species, are of major tourist interest . In the city there is the Carolina Hospital.

Three regional roads meet in Carolina : the R33 runs from eMakhazeni in the northwest to Amsterdam in the southeast, the R36 runs in a northeast-southwest direction and connects Mashishing with Ermelo, and the R38 runs from Bethal in the west to eManzana in the east.
