description

Carpinus dayongiana is a tree up to 4 meters high with gray bark . The branches are dark purple and bare. The leaves have a 5 to 7 millimeter long, downy hairy stem. The leaf blade is 2.5 to 4.5 inches long and 1 to 1.5 inches wide, lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, long pointed, with a broad wedge-shaped to more or less rounded base and a simply bristly serrated leaf margin. 18 to 20 pairs of nerves are formed. The upper side of young leaves is shaggy hairy, the underside is shaggy hairy along the leaf veins and otherwise glabrous.

The female inflorescences are 1.4 to 2.5 inches long with a diameter of 1 to 1.2 inches. The inflorescence axis is 1.4 to 2.1 inches long, hairy thin and downy. The bracts are 5 to 8 millimeters long, about 3 to 4 millimeters wide, semi-ovate, pointed and downy hairy on top along the veins. The outer leaf margin is closely serrated, the inner part is entire with a rolled up leaf tube at the base. Four or five first-order leaf veins are formed, the reticulated veins protruding. The fruits are 2 to 3 millimeters long and 1.5 to 2.5 millimeters wide, broadly egg-shaped, clearly ribbed and, except for the shaggy, hairy tip, bare nuts . Carpinus dayongiana flowers from April to May, the fruits ripen from June to August.
