Carpinus omeiensis is a small tree from the genus of hornbeams ( Carpinus ) with dark brown, balding branches and leaves with a balding top and shaggy, hairy underside. The natural range of the species is in China.

Carpinus omeiensis is a tree up to 7 meters high with gray bark . The branches are dark brown and balding. The leaves have a 5 to 8 millimeter long, dense, pale yellow shaggy stalk. The leaf blade is 6 to 8 inches long and 2.5 to 3.5 inches wide, elliptical or egg-shaped elliptical, pointed or tail-pointed, with a rounded or broadly wedge-shaped base and a simply bristly serrated leaf edge. Twelve to 16 pairs of nerves are formed. The upper side of the leaf is balding, the underside is covered with shaggy hair and has axillary whiskers.

The female inflorescences are 6 to 8 inches long with a diameter of 1.5 to 2 inches. The inflorescence axis is 2 to 3 inches long, initially densely shaggy hairy and later balding. The bracts are 1.5 to 1.6 inches long, 4 to 5 millimeters wide, half-egg-shaped with a pointed end. The outer leaf margin is closely serrated without a basal lobe, the inner part is entire with a short basal auricle . The leaves have four or five veins of the first order and are sparsely shaggy hairy along the reticulated veins. When fruits are about 4 millimeters long and 3 millimeters wide, broadly ovate significantly ribbed, densely pubescent and at the head of shaggy hairy nutlets formed. Carpinus omeiensis flowers from May to June, the fruits ripen from July to August.

Occurrence and location requirements

The natural range is in the Chinese provinces of Guizhou and in Sichuan in forests at an altitude of 1000 to 1900 meters.

Systematics

Carpinus omeiensis is a species of the hornbeam genus ( Carpinus ). This is in the family of birch plants of the subfamily (Betulaceae) coryloideae assigned (Coryloideae). The species was first described scientifically in 1964 by Hu Xiansu and Fang Wenpei . The genus name Carpinus comes from Latin and was already used by the Romans for the hornbeam, the species name omeiensis refers to the " holy mountain " Emei Shan in Sichuan.
