Carrefour is the second largest city in Haiti on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola . The city has 439,581 inhabitants (as of 2005). In 1996 there were 290,204. According to the current administrative structure, it is part of the Arrondissement de Port-au-Prince in the Ouest department .
Together with the capital Port-au-Prince and the cities of Pétionville and Delmas , it forms the so-called Aire Metropolitaine .
Carrefour is a city of great poverty, characterized by child labor (including illegal slavery) and gangs. In 1999, eleven young men were executed in a massacre in the slum of Feuilles de Carrefour .
On January 12, 2010, a major earthquake struck Haiti . According to a spokesman for the World Food Program, half of the buildings in Carrefour were destroyed.
