Carrigrohane Castle

Carrigrohane Castle ( Irish Gaelic : Caisleán Charraig Ruacháin ) is a ruined castle in the village Carrigrohane in Irish County Cork . It is located on an overhanging cliff above the River Lee and consists of two buildings that differ in age, height, size and architecture. The larger and older building is rectangular and has three floors.

history

The construction of the original structure is attributed to the MacCarthy family . In 1641, during the Irish Confederation Wars , the castle fell into disrepair. It was later repaired and used as a seat for the robber baron , Captain Cape , and his bandits; they ambushed travelers and plundered the area. After a restoration at the end of the 19th century, the castle was later renovated again and has been used as a family home since the end of the 20th century.

Geography and ghosts

According to the people living in the area, a cave at the bottom of the rock on which the ruin stands is said to be connected to the caves of Ovens , about 6.5 km away. A deep sinkhole called "Hell's Hole" under overhangs of limestone cliffs at a bend in the river upstream from the castle is said to be haunted by a "monstrous bipedal with a mane like a horse and a body like an owl".
