Carsten Karkmeyer
Carsten Karkmeyer (born April 27, 1873 in Bremen ; † February 10, 1951 in Bremen) was a pedagogue , politician (DVP), member of the Bremen citizenship and economic director of the city hospitals in Bremen.
biography
Karkmeyer was the son of the farmer and carpenter Carsten Karkmeyer (1830–1880), who died early. His mother made sure that he attended a teacher training college after primary school. From 1893 to 1906 he was a teacher in Woltmershausen , then in Seehausen and in Gröpelingen at the Kirchenallee school. He continued his education through university courses in Frankfurt am Main . Politically, he oriented himself towards liberalism . In 1904 he appeared as a co-founder of the Bremen Citizens' Association . During the First World War he was managing director of the Central Aid Committee of the Red Cross in Bremen.
After the war he organized relief efforts for children. He has now joined the German People's Party (DVP). He was a member of Bremen's citizenship in 1918 and from 1920 to 1933. In 1919/20 he was in the Bremen National Assembly . In the 1920s he was deputy parliamentary group leader of the DVP in Bremen. From 1923 to 1933 he was the economic director of the Bremen hospitals in the context of the deputation for the health system. In 1933 the National Socialists “took leave” of him from his offices and at the end of 1933 he had to retire.
After the Second World War , from October 1945 he was honorary managing director of Bremer Volkshilfe without affiliation to any party . He spoke out sharply against Vagts as Mayor of Bremen.
Honors
The Karkmeyer Straße in Bremen- Kattenturm was named after him in 1968.
