The Carthamus leucocaulos is a species of the genus Carthamus in the sunflower family (Asteraceae).

features

Carthamus leucocaulos is an annual stem therophyte that reaches heights of 10 to 50 centimeters. The stem is almost bare, slightly glandular and cobweby, shiny white to purple in color and has no spots. The leaves are shiny, with entire margins, pinnate to pinnate and consist of 2 to 4 pairs of sections that are 13 to 17 millimeters long and strongly thorny. The outer bracts are protruding to bent back and with a length of 35 to 55 millimeters two to three times as long as the inner bracts. The scales of the pappus are mostly trimmed.

The flowering period extends from June to August.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 20.

Occurrence

Carthamus leucocaulos occurs in the area of ​​the Peloponnese and the Aegean Sea . The species grows on dry ruderal sites . In Crete it can be found at altitudes from 0 to 1200 meters.
