Casa Calvet ( Spanish and Catalan for House Calvet ) in Barcelona is the work of the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí . The residential and commercial building built on Carrer de Casp 48 in the Eixample district for textile manufacturer Pedro Mártir Calvet is considered to be Gaudi's most conventional building. The building blends in harmoniously with its surroundings and impresses with its elegance. The facade appears - atypically for Gaudí - symmetrical and even. The curved lines, sloping columns and colors that he otherwise preferred are missing. Only the baroque-looking bay window on the second floor, the two gables and the cloverleaf-shaped balconies take some of the austerity and show modern elements. On the balconies, Gaudí's skillful handling of wrought and cast iron work, which he skilfully combines with the natural stone of the facade, is evident again.

As with many of his buildings, Gaudí also designed the interior - from the iron grilles of the elevator to the wall cladding and the furniture. In many places in the house there are depictions and allusions to mushrooms that Pedro Calvet collected. On the one hand, Calvet commissioned Gaudí to maintain a modern and future-oriented building, and on the other, probably because Gaudí, like his client, was a self-confident Catalan with a penchant for nationalism.

The plans were initially rejected by the state authorities because they exceeded the permitted eaves height. Gaudí therefore intended to abandon the gable. Ultimately, the building application was granted in its original form, probably under pressure from the client. Casa Calvet was Gaudí's only building to receive an official award: in 1900, it won first prize in the city of Barcelona’s annual architectural competition ( Concurs anual d'edificis artístics )
