Caspar Widmer

Caspar Widmer also Widmer-Heusser (born October 1, 1829 in Hombrechtikon ; † November 2, 1913 in Gossau ; legal resident in Hombrechtikon and since 1872 in Gossau) was a Swiss textile manufacturer .

Life

Family and education

The reformed baptized, from the canton of Zurich situated political community originates Hombrechtikon Caspar Widmer, son of Caspar Widmer senior and whose spouse Anna Elisabeth born Heusser, visited after his compulsory education from 1847 to 1850, the teacher training college in Küsnacht . In the following year he trained as a secondary teacher at the Lausanne Academy . In 1855 Caspar Widmer married his cousin Susanna, daughter of the cotton mill owner and Zurich Grand Councilor Johannes Heusser. He died in Gossau at the beginning of November 1913 at the age of 84.

Professional background

After completing his training, Widmer took up a teaching position at the upper secondary school in Zurich in 1851 , which he resigned in 1863. In 1868, after the death of his father-in-law, Widmer and his brother-in-law were put in charge of the cotton spinning mill in Tannenberg in Gossau. After it burned down in 1894, he ordered the establishment of a mechanical silk weaving mill at the same location. Caspar Widmer also took over the presidency of the Swiss Spinners, Twists and Weavers Association in 1881, which he held until 1896. In 1892 he was elected to the Board of Directors of the Eidgenössische Bank , in 1894 he was appointed President, in 1906 he retired from this position due to age. Caspar Widmer, who also held the office of mayor of Gosau from 1875 to 1890 , is considered to be the main initiator of the Wetzikon-Meilen-Bahn built in 1903 .
