Castanopsis argentea is a species of tree fromthe beech family (Fagaceae) that occurs in Southeast Asia. The nuts are edible.

Castanopsis argentea is a tree .

The fruit cups (cupulae) are covered with branched spines . The spines cover the entire surface of the fruit cup. They are erect and pointed. A fruit cup contains one to four nuts that are oval or flattened. The nuts are up to 2.5 by 1.5 centimeters in size. The fruit stalk is up to 1.5 centimeters long.

Flowering time is January to December, mostly March to April. The fruit ripens from February to November, mostly May to July.

Distribution and locations

The species occurs in Thailand , Myanmar , Malaysia and Indonesia . It grows in evergreen hill forests, in pine - dipterocarpus forests and mixed deciduous forests and savannas at 50 to 1680 m above sea level, mostly 900 to 1100 m.
