Castanopsis echidnocarpa is a species of tree fromthe beech family (Fagaceae) that occurs in Southeast Asia. The nuts are edible.

Castanopsis echidnocarpa is a tree .

The fruit cups (cupulae) are covered with branched and simple spines . The spines are hairy and balding. Each fruit cup contains a single nut . The nut is curved on one side, the base and tip are brought closer together. But its outline is spherical.

Flowering time is from April to January, mostly from April to September. The fruit ripens from March to December, mostly from August to October.

Distribution and locations

The species occurs in Thailand , Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Myanmar and China. It grows in deeper mountain forests, in oak - pine forests, in dry evergreen forests, in mixed deciduous and deciduous Dipterocarpus forests. They often stand by rivers. They occur from 50 to 1600 m above sea level, mostly between 700 and 1200 m.
