Castanopsis javanica is a species of tree fromthe beech family (Fagaceae) that occurs in Southeast Asia. The nuts are edible.

features

Castanopsis javanica is a tree . The leaves are pointed at the end and wedge-shaped at the base.

The fruit cups (cupulae) have simple spikes . The spines are straight, close together and completely cover the surface of the fruit cup. The fruit cups, including the spines, are a maximum of four centimeters in diameter, usually 2.5 to 4 centimeters. Each fruit cup contains only one nut, which it completely encloses.

The nut is wider than it is long and flattened at the top and the base.

The flowering time is in January, the fruit ripens from November to January.

Distribution and locations

The species occurs in Thailand , Vietnam , Malaysia , Singapore and Indonesia . It grows in tropical evergreen lowland forests at around 100 m above sea level.
