Castanopsis pseudo-hystrix is a species of tree fromthe beech family (Fagaceae) that occurs in Southeast Asia. The bark is used to clean teeth.

features

Castanopsis pseudo-hystrix is a tree . The leaves are sawn in the upper half. The underside of the leaves is sparsely covered with short, simple hairs and is balding.

The fruit cups (cupulae) are covered with branched spines . They are erect, bulky and have three to five side branches. They partially cover the skin of the fruit cup and are sparsely hairy. Each fruit cup contains only one nut , is uniform and has a diameter of up to 2.5 centimeters including the spines. The fruit cup does not open. The nut is egg-shaped.

Flowering time is March to December, mostly from March to April. The fruit ripens from December to January.

Distribution and locations

The species is endemic to Thailand . It grows in deeper mountain forests, in pine - oak forests and dry evergreen forests at 800 to 1370 m above sea level, mostly at 1000 to 1200 m.
