Castanopsis thaiensis is a species of tree fromthe beech family (Fagaceae) that occurs in Southeast Asia.

Castanopsis thaiensis is a tree . The underside of the leaves is densely covered with short, simple hairs .

The fruit cups (cupulae) are covered with branched spines . They partially cover the skin of the fruit cup and are sparsely hairy. Each fruit cup contains one to three nuts and has a diameter of up to 2.5 centimeters including the spines. The fruit cup opens with 3 to 5 flaps.

Flowering time is November. The fruit ripens from October to November.

Distribution and locations

The species is endemic to Thailand and only occurs in the Chiang Mai area. It grows in evergreen forests at 800 to 1000 m above sea level.
