The Castel Beseno rises in Trentino near Rovereto in the municipality of Besenello , Italy .

location

The hilltop castle is located on the rocky hill overlooking the Adige Valley and the Rio Cavallo valley and covers an area of ​​1.6  hectares . It is the largest fortification in the region and was used to monitor the Vallagarina area and the connecting routes between the German Empire and the Italian peninsula.

It has an almost triangular shape, with a tournament area on one side. The "tips" of the triangle are formed by bastions that served to ward off enemies from all directions.

history

Medieval origins (first written record in the 12th century), once fiefs of those of Beseno and then of Castelbarco, it was renovated by the Trapp family at the beginning of the 16th century , giving it the current appearance of a Renaissance fortress has been provided with structures suitable for the use of firearms. In 1972, the impressive remains were donated to the Autonomous Province of Trento , which began extensive restoration .

As a branch of the Buonconsiglio Castle Museum , Monuments and Collections of the Province , the castle has been open to the public since 1988.
