The Castello Gizzi is a hilltop castle in the Italian municipality of Torre de 'Passeri in the province of Pescara .
history
The castle was built in 1719 by Margravine Smeralda Mazara di Sulmona on the remains of one of the 12th century defense towers belonging to the monastery of San Clemente a Casauria .
In 1967 the castle passed from the Mazara family to the Gizzi family . In 1979 it became the seat of the Istitudo di Studi e Ricerche of the Casa di Dante in Abruzzo , which Corrado Gizzi had founded. In addition, he also founded the Dante Museum “F. Bellonzi ”and the library“ MA Caldora ”.

The castle consists of a main building, an outbuilding, a cellar and an 8 hectare park. The main building has four floors. The main facade has a stone portal with a balcony above it, above which there is a coat of arms of the Mazara family.
In addition to this main facade, there are five medieval arches and a sarcophagus from the 4th century BC on the forecourt of the castle . As well as remains of columns from the imperial era.
Casa di Dante Foundation in Abruzzo
The castle houses the Casa di Dante Foundation in Abruzzo under the management of MiBACT . The castle, acquired by the Gizzis in 1967 , has been the seat of the Istitudo di Studi e Ricerche des Casa di Dante in Abruzzo since 1979 , which was founded in Pescara by Corrado Gizzi, Ermano Circeo, Luigi Iachini Bellisari, Piero De Tommaso, Dante Marramiero and Giuseppe Profeta . Thanks to the contribution of the great national and international Dante followers, the aim of the institute is to spread the works and thoughts of Dante Alighieri. It is located in the province of Pescara, has a president, a scientific committee and an executive branch that includes Dante lecturers and students from all four regions of Abruzzo . The institute works with the most important Dante cities, such as Florence , Ravenna and Rome , and promotes debates, conventions and round tables and conferences. The official activities of the Casa di Dante began in 1980 with the conference of Giorgio Petrocchi in Pescara and continued in 1981 with the beginning of the conference “Dante e il Rossettismo” under the direction of the Dantist Gabriele Rossetti from Vasto , who then became the painter's son '' Dante Gabriel '' took over.
On December 23, 2005 the moral unity of the foundation “Casa di Dante in Abruzzo” was created with the seat in Castello Gizzi, whereas conferences were often held in Pescara beforehand. After the damage on April 6, 2009, the castle was restored and reopened in 2019. There is now the official seat of the foundation.
