Marchesale Castle

The Castello Marchesale ( Eng .: Margravial Castle) is a small castle in the Italian municipality of Palmoli in the province of Chieti .

history

The Pandulfo Di Sangros , Counts of Montedorisio , had the castle built in 1095, while the margravial palace dates from the 15th century and the chapel of St. Charles Borromeo was built in 1772 by order of Margrave Severino di Gagliati . Archaeological excavations have recently unearthed the remains of glazed ceramics from the 11th century, mostly in the cavity between the old round tower and the polygon tower .

description

The castle stands in the northern part of the village, called “Le Coste”, and is protected by the Treste river . It consists of a twelve-sided tower, possibly from the 16th century with a round tower integrated, the Palace of Severino-Longo and the Chapel of San Carlo Borromeo . Up until the beginning of the 20th century there was also a "Great Tower" with vertical walls without a bevel. A garden inside the castle is fortified with casemates to defend the margravial palace. The predominant building material used is the locally available limestone , which has been cut into square blocks for use as corner stones and for the support arches. For the moldings were bricks and roof tiles , arranged in rows and protruding over the facade used. The balustrades of the balconies were made of more compact Istrian limestone. Scattered here and there you can admire architectural elements in greenish-gray sandstone , such as B. at the margravial palace. Investigations have brought to light city walls and a brick channel next to the bevel on the south side of the twelve-sided tower.

Museum of rural culture and the abandoned castles of the Vastese area
