Acquafredda Castle

The Castello di Acquafredda (The Castle on the Cold Water) is located in the municipality of Siliqua in the province of Sud Sardegna and rises on a mountain above the valley of the Cixerri River on the Italian island of Sardinia . The castle complex is visible from afar in the landscape. The Castello di Acquafredda is one of the largest castle ruins in Sardinia.

The castle was first mentioned in a papal document in 1215. The later owner of the castle, Count Ugolino della Gherardesca , had it converted into a fortress around 1257. After the death of Count Ugolino, the castle went to the city-state of Pisa and in 1324, after the end of the Pisan rule in Sardinia, to the Crown of Aragon . Around 1410, however, the castle was abandoned by Aragon. Later it was owned by various Sardinian feudal lords until it passed to the King of Sardinia Viktor Amadeus III in 1785 . was sold by Savoy . In the 19th century the castle was abandoned and remained uninhabited or unused and therefore increasingly fell into disrepair, so that today only remains are preserved as ruins.

During excavations in the courtyard of the castle ruins in 2005, skeletons of three people from the Middle Ages were found who were between 35 and 45 years old at the time of their death.

Trivia

An inventory list of the Aragonese castle from 1355 mentions for the first time "una cassa sardesca gran ab passadors" a "Sardinian chest chest" which is still made by Sardinian carpenters today.
