The Castello di Monteodorisio is a medieval fortress in the Italian municipality of Monteodorisio in the province of Chieti .

history

The hilltop castle dates back to the 11th century and was probably built by the Normans . In 1095 it appeared in a compilation of goods addressed by the Count Roberto di Loritello to the Theatine bishop Rainolfo . In addition to the castle, two churches connected to it, San Salvatore inside and San Pietro outside, were donated to the Theatine diocese. The castle fell successively to different families, including the Del Borgos , the Bariles , the Caldoras and the D'Avalos .

description

The castle is located in the highest part of the settlement on the western edge of the hill, where it drops steeply to the Sinello River. This location allowed a clear view of possible enemies, but also made it possible to escape. Today only two sides of the trapezoidal complex are visible, namely the north-west and south-east side, as well as three large towers three of the four corner points. The castle was built from river pebbles, whole or machined, that came from the Sinello River , mixed with clay . The towers are round. The north part consists of four meter thick walls with a height of 14 meters and is with openings with drapery . In the highest part of this facade there is a wide arched window . This part, along with the towers, is the oldest. The four loopholes were operated from a walkway behind. The masonry structure is more recent. The masonry structure shows reinforcement interventions from the 15th century and others from 1960. The west tower has a purely decorative console crown without drains. Above is a frieze with intertwined arches and above it a frieze with ovals. The north tower bears an architectural motif made up of herringbone stones below the cornice between the bevel and the cylindrical part.

The Museo per l'economia tra l'antichità ed il Rinasciamento (English: Museum of the Economy from Antiquity to the Renaissance) is housed in the rooms of the castle .
