The Castello di Saint-Marcel ( French Château de Saint-Marcel ) is a low castle in the district Surpian of the municipality of Saint-Marcel im Envers ( orographically right bank of the Dora Baltea ). The castle is currently being restored: In November 2010, the regional council approved the start of archaeological investigations for the preservation of historical monuments with the aim of later use for cultural purposes. The castle belongs to the autonomous region of Aosta Valley and can only be visited to the public occasionally as part of guided tours to observe the safety and restoration work in summer.

description

Floor plan of Carlo Nigra's castle

When the castle was built, it had the fundamentally square floor plan of a one-story residential castle, to which the Lords of Fénis had a western structure with a rectangular floor plan attached to accommodate an apartment. The complex is dominated by a tower with a square floor plan on the northwest side; the main building is adorned by two turrets with crowns that protrude from the north and east corners, similar to those at Ussel Castle .

The halls had wooden ceilings and in many of the interior rooms you can still see the remains of large chimneys.

Even if over the centuries the complex has fallen into disrepair until the roof has been completely lost, the restoration in the years 2011–2012 ensured the overhaul of the tower and the western structure as well as new roofing work; the south side of the tower, which had been partially destroyed, was also repaired.

history

The Castello di Saint-Marcel was built in its current form on the remains of a permanent house for Giacomo di Challant-Aymavilles , son of Luigi di Challant , between the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century after plans for a rural residential castle built. Saint-Marcel already insisted on the fiefdom of the same name as a branch of the fiefdom of Ussel , with which it shared the history of their property: both belonged to the powerful Challant family from the start . The first known lord of Saint-Marcel was Ebalo I di Challant , already Vice Count of Aosta, who owned the estates of the Challants, Castello di Graines and Castello di Fénis - still in the hands of their predecessors - the dominions of Saint-Marcel, Ussel and Chenal in Montjovet added.

In the 17th century it was "sequestered" by Baron Paolo Emanuele di San Secondo as a guarantee for the dowry of the future wife and gradually passed into the possession of Carlo Emanuele di San Secondo ; it remained in the possession of the Count Bianco of San Secondo di Pinerolo until it was bought by the “Società esploratrice delle miniere di Saint-Marcel” (German: Mining Research Society of Saint-Marcel) in the 18th century.

In the 20th century, when the castle became municipal property, it was completely derelict. She was one of the castles that - included in the program " Alcotra 2007-2013" as Project No. 107 -. By the regional administration together with the Castello di Graines as part of the European program Interreg IIIA "AVER. Anciens Vestiges En Ruine ”, a project to find the optimal method for securing and restoring medieval castles, which have fallen into ruins, were restored as a pilot plant. The restoration was completed in 2012. Before the restoration in 2011/2012, the castle was in a poor state of preservation, but today it is in better condition, even if it will probably not be possible to make a state with it for a long time to come.
