Castello di Sant'Aniceto
The Castello di Sant'Aniceto (also Castello San Niceto) is a ruined castle in Motta San Giovanni in the metropolitan city of Reggio Calabria in Calabria . The castle lies at an altitude of 670 m slm
Castrum S. Niceti was mentioned for the first time in the decree of Charles I of Anjou on the remuneration of the fort crews and the repair of the castles from 1269 . The castle is also mentioned in the lists of 1275 and 1282. The castle's crew, which was under direct royal administration, consisted of a castellan and ten servientes . However, a castle that the Byzantines had built has stood here since the beginning of the 11th century . The Calabrian coast and the coast of Sicily can be seen from the castle . It was hoped to be able to react quickly to attacks by the Saracens from Sicily.
The castle is built irregularly. The gate system consists of two square towers. There is a defensive wall on the long sides of the castle. It has a height of about 3 to 3.5 meters and encloses an open area, the outer bailey . Here the knights and their servants lived in tents. The outer bailey is completed in the west by a tower fort. Further to the west is the Palas , a residence. The castle is about 180 meters long and 55 meters wide.
